To accomplish this, RIMOWA travels around the globe to pay tribute to architectural movements with a lasting impact, those that serve as constant sources of inspiration. Following visits to the modernist Vila Volman, the iconic Bauhaus Dessau, and Germany's Haus Kemper, among others, this latest chapter takes the Maison to Japan to visit Kisho Kurokawa's iconic Capsule House K.

Though tucked in the woods of Japan’s Nagano Prefecture, fans of Metabolist architecture are likely already privy to its iconic status. A movement that saw its beginnings in the 1960s, the building is among few representations of the discipline that remains standing.
Built in response to Japan’s budding urban population, Capsule House K embodies Kurokawa’s vision of modular, compact living— defined by its distinctive cylindrical design and emphasis on minimalism and functionality.

Reminiscent of the now-demolished Nakagin Capsule Tower, the home— which was built as a living space for Kurokawa himself— is defined by its self-contained and stackable capsules, reflecting a distinct approach to urban living that anticipated the need for sustainable solutions.

Whilst capsule-centric Metabolist architectural ventures did not share the same fate, with their purpose rendered obsolete by a continued need for permanent and larger living spaces, Capsule House K was restored in 2019 to its original state, remaining revered for its forward-thinking, functionalist design.
